History of Dandeli, Karnataka

Dandeli has a rich history of attracting settlers, with people from various states like Gujarat, Rajasthan, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Jammu, and Kashmir finding employment and making Dandeli their home. This diverse mix of people has earned Dandeli the nickname “Mini India.”

In this Mini India, you’ll encounter friendly, helpful, loyal, and trustworthy individuals who are more than willing to assist you during your visit. If you’re someone who loves to travel, create memories, explore jungles, witness wildlife, and experience the serenity of early mornings in nature, then Dandeli is the perfect destination for your next vacation.

The Love Story Behind Dandeli’s Name

The history of Dandeli is a captivating tale, much like classic love stories such as Romeo and Juliet or Heer and Ranjha. This town owes its name to an intriguing love story involving a man named Dandelappa.

Dandelappa, a loyal and humble servant of the Mirashi landlords, found himself in a unique love story. He fell in love with the lady of the Mirashi family, and she reciprocated his feelings by proposing marriage. However, due to his unwavering loyalty to the landlords, Dandelappa declined the proposal.

In an unfortunate turn of events, the lady falsely accused Dandelappa of inappropriate behavior to her brothers. Believing her, they tragically killed Dandelappa, separating his head and body. The present-day existence of two temples dedicated to him marks the locations where his head and body were laid to rest.

And so, the town was named ‘Dandeli,’ forever memorializing the tragic love story of Dandelappa.

How Dandeli Started to Develop:

Dandeli, a town with a current population of over 71,000 people, is a harmonious place where individuals of various religions like Hindu, Muslim, Christian, Jains, and Sikhs live together peacefully and happily. However, in the 1930s, the scenario was quite different. At that time, Dandeli’s population was only 515, and most of its residents were employed in the forestry department and government sawmill.

During this period, the inhabitants comprised diverse communities such as Konkanis, Devali, Marathas, Kuruba, Lambani, Africans, and Muslims. The settlement was situated on the banks of the Kali river and transformed into an industrial town with the establishment of several companies.

The Indian Plywood Manufacturing Company, which is now closed, was one of the early enterprises. Subsequently, the Lalbhai Ferro-manganese Factory and the renowned West Coast Paper Mill, initiated by the Indian businessman S.K. Bangur Group in 1955, contributed to the town’s industrial development.

Other notable establishments included the Indian Saw Mill and various small industries. The Karnataka Power Corporation also played a significant role in constructing power-generating dams along the Kali river. This period marked the development of Old-Dandeli.\

West Coast PaperMill, Dandeli – Contribution to develop this place:

The recognition of Dandeli by people across India can be attributed to the presence of the West Coast Paper Mill. As news of employment opportunities spread, individuals from various places began migrating to Dandeli. Over the years, Dandeli earned the reputation of being the primary employment hub, especially due to the West Coast Paper Mill. With time, the mill expanded, eventually becoming the largest paper mill in Karnataka.

As more people settled in Dandeli, a ripple effect occurred. Some individuals, inspired by the town’s growth, ventured into starting their own businesses. This gradual development process has led to Dandeli emerging as the adventure capital of South India. The town’s journey from being recognized for the West Coast Paper Mill to becoming a thriving hub of employment and entrepreneurship showcases its remarkable transformation over the years.
